Jair Dynast: V.I.A.L.E.N.C.E.

After receiving an advanced copy of Jair Dynast’s debut album V.I.A.L.E.N.C.E., we were thoroughly impressed. We had never heard of this talented, now New York based lyricist, but his intriguing story telling ability, varied flows and production caught our attention instantly. On the phone from Brooklyn, we chopped it up with Jair to see what makes this mc/producer tick.

SkaterRap: You seem to have a way of introducing things. I have an advanced copy of your album and "the Intro" is banging so would you introduce yourself to the SkaterRap community?

Jair Dynast: Peace SkaterRap heads! I go by the name Jair Dynast "One Whom God Enlightened the Ruler of a Dynasty" from my heart to my mind to your ear to your heart to your mind.

Gailea Momolu: Darkstar Pro Skateboarder

We are pleased to feature yet another ethnic minority that has excelled in the skateboarding arena. This time it is none other than superstar, Gailea Momolu. However, he would be the first to admit, quite modestly, that he’s just an ordinary person who has had a lot of help from others to obtain what he’s accomplished.

After coming across a quote in German, he was recently surprised to find that he even has fans in Germany. Gailea is from Ottawa, Canada having grown up in a place called Gloucester, a 20-minute bus trip from Canada’s capital city where he graduated high school and started his skateboarding career. In those days, he didn’t know much about sponsors until he met two friends, Dan Opec and Chet Thomas - it was Chet that shopped his sponsor-me-tape to talent seekers. This is how he was flown to Los Angeles, CA and got his first sponsor.

Simple Touch of Fate

articlesaz, 2006

Compiled and Edited By: Arlene Uslander & Brenda Warneka

The book tells not one story of "fate", but many individual stories. Most of which are pretty spectacular events, that, had not the hand of "fate" or whatever else we choose to call it, intervened, the consequences would have been dire, to the point of, a matter of life or death in some instances. This book is one that will make you think long after you have put it down. A book that you will read and want to pass on. An Anthology, a coming together of real people with real stories of chance to tell. Or of fate!

Were these events fate or just strange coincidence? This book won’t convince you of either, I feel, unless you already have a foot well grounded in "fates", existence, but it will feed the imagination and help to sustain the mysteries surrounding the concept of "fate".

Tom Hanks: DaVinci Code

skaterrap, 2006

It is a blessed day for Christianity. Let's look at this movie from the extremist viewpoint - it's to be intolerant of a fictional cartoon, an imaginative work or anything that is deemed to poke fun at a religious sect and/or ideology.

The DaVinci Code is a movie that is critical of the Catholic Church and especially, all Christian believers who have been told that Jesus was born of Mary and Joseph in a manger in Bethlehem because the Inn was already full when they arrived in the city on their way to pay taxes.

The story tells us that Jesus remained a single man teaching the gospel and that he had twelve disciples, fishermen - no women. So to the intolerant amongst us, this movie borders on blasphemy. It calls our priests liars and perpetrators of this lie for centuries.

Gnarls Barkley: Take you to St. Elsewhere

In today's commercial hip hop climate, we can often find ourselves predicting the next hit single or the next brand new artist's background and choice of material. Not with Gnarls Barkley and their new "St. Elsewhere" debut.

Made up of the critically acclaimed rapper/vocalist Cee-lo Green from Goodie Mob and U.K. producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse of the groups the Gorillas and DangerDoom, this eclectic group pushes the boundaries of current day hip hop. Concept wise, the album doesn't sound as cohesive as one might expect after hearing the fluid melding of Cee-lo's high pitched voice and Danger Mouse's electro funk on the No. 1 smash "Crazy". The LP moves from song to song appearing to have no particular direction or focal point. In various interviews, Gnarls Barkley claimed this was the intent. However, upon a closer listen you get the over all feeling that the two artists seemed to be on a search for an escape.
